The copyrighted photograph (below) by George Gobet, Agence
France-Press, was published on the front page of The
New York Times (copyright) June 28th, 2003. We see a child gunman
wearing a stuffed animal backpack while pointing his
automatic weapon at the photojournalist. For weeks after
viewing it I was mesmerized, and also disturbed by the
photo and what it tells us.
Why? So that website viewers may think about
the silence surrounding our knowledge that upwards of
300,000 youngsters in western Africa, some of them
reportedly as young as seven years old, are combatants in
wars, are in misery...many are orphaned, they're severely
wounded emotionally and physically...most have lost family
members and all have lost all sense of community, place
and safety.
Heavily armed with automatic weapons, these
children help keep the fighting going... some or much of
which is fueled by natural resources such as
diamonds and oil, all destined for the affluent
industrialized nations of the world.
What have we learned from the Shoah?
What can we learn yet from the Shoah?
What can we do to stop this type of
slaughter?
Can we remain silent while this epic cycle of death
and destruction continues on?
DON'T BE SILENT
about
torture,
lands mines,
child soldiers,
child
slavery worldwide (used in the manufacturing of chocolate,
clothing and shoes for western countries,
and as forced sex slaves),
war,
genocide,
murder-suicide bombings (which are
a crime against humanity),
holding people in prison without
access to counsel & without trials,
and
other human rights violations

"Anytime you have an
opportunity to make things
better and you don't,
then you are wasting your
time on earth!"
- Roberto
Clemente,
late American baseball player,
quoted in
"Celebrate the States: Puerto Rico"
(Benchmark Books, 2001)
Below: Two
of four photos of "street art" in Sarajevo given to me by
an American journalist in 1994 at the opening of the
Museum of History & Industry exhibit "A Day in the Warsaw
Ghetto" in Seattle. I don't know who the artist was.
The portraits depict youngsters who died during the recent
war....their portrayal with "angels wings" is
striking!
The MOHAI exhibit included seven "Under
the Wings..." drawings with Warsaw Ghetto photos taken by
Nazi soldier Heinz Jost on his birthday in 1941.

PLANNING TO VISIT ISRAEL?
Please consider bringing a second suitcase and fill
it with
with wearable clothing and shoes which you have at home but no
longer use.
Why?
Jerusalem alone has tens of thousands of impoverished people.
Your hotel staff can assist you in contacting
Jewish, Christian and Muslim social service agencies.
Some hotels (such as the Scottish Guesthouse) have
social service volunteers and staff on site.
~
When getting ready to leave you can leave your toothpaste,
shampoo, soap and
other toiletry items with social service agency staff who will
distribute those products too - you can readily replace these
items at home and you can lighten your luggage and give
something usable to local people who cannot afford them.

Public service
appeal
for supporters of a safe & healthy Israel:
Despite a national law
banning smoking inside municipal
and public buildings
in Israel,
10,000 (ten thousand) Israelis
die each year
from cigarette
caused cancer.
2,000 (two thousand) non-smoking Israelis die each year
from cancers caused by secondary smoke inhalation.
Thousands
more die from cigarette-caused
heart attacks, high blood pressure and emphysema.
Please ask the Israeli government to enforce
the national Israeli law
banning
smoking in public places -
including hotels and bed & breakfast establishments.
Great news - some progress can be reported -
With pressure from health concerned Israelis and overseas
supporters of a safe and healthy Israel,
in late 2006 and early 2007 the government finally agreed
to enforce national Israeli law and make
all of Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion Airports terminals smoke-free.
Passengers of all ages, including babies, toddlers and children
should be allowed to travel and all who work in and at the
airport should be able to
do so within a
healthy, safe environment.
Please urge Israel to join the rest of the developed world
by asking the Israeli government to enforce the Israeli law
banning all smoking inside public places.

Looking for a healthy place to stay while vacationing in
beautiful Haifa?
Good luck!
The gleaming new one-story glassed-walled Haifa bus station
allows deadly primary and secondary smoking within the bus
station.
With the exception of two smoke-free anti-Semitic agenda hotels
run by Messianics - whose management
targets Jewish tourists for conversion to Messianic Christianity -
all the other hotels and bed & breakfasts I contacted in Haifa
this past spring prior to my May teaching trip are
smoking, unhealthy, guest and tourist unfriendly establishments.
If the Israeli government is serious about making Israel an
international tourist destination and a global center for
corporate investment and academic research the government must
consider protecting the health of
all residents, citizens and visitors.

THE 2007 CRUSHED WINGS
AWARDS TO AN AMERICAN INSTITUTION PROMOTING AN ANTI-CHILD,
ANTI-FAMILY, ANTI-WORKER AND ANTI-AMERICAN AGENDA:
The executive director, board members and business-accounts
managers of Seattle's downtown YMCA are winners.
In 2007 the Seattle YMCA implemented a new membership
policy denying membership to residents and visitors of Seattle
who wish to - and in many cases - are only able to pay for
membership for themselves and their families with legal American
government-printed and government issued currency, commonly
known as cash.
The new policy excludes people unable to pay with
credit cards. Shamefully, the YMCA membership payment policy
encourages credit card debt for Seattle residents and visitors -
all the while ignoring the fact that millions of American
families - especially poor and low income ones - struggle every
year with credit card debt.
A front page New York Times article this year stated
that credit cards have become a national catastrophe causing
terrible hardship for hundreds of thousands of Americans.
|
The YMCA is right in the thick of the problem rather than helping.
To their disgrace, the downtown Seattle YMCA staff does not
inform prospective members that they can go to other regional
YMCA centers in the city and suburbs and pay for membership at
those Y sites using legal American currency.
In practicality, among others impacted by the Y's
policy, disabled residents who live downtown or near downtown
are simply and effectively excluded from membership when they're
told they cannot become members if they do not have plastic or
electronic payment methods.
If they happen to find out they can get a membership at
another Y facility in the region they are then forced to commute
to another facility to pay. While Seattle - King County
buses have wheelchair and disabled passenger access (albeit
sometimes the lifts do not work or there isn't available space),
the policy createds an unreasonable, unfair and unjust burden.
Thanks to Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna
for endorsing the YMCA's restrictive, exclusionary membership
policy.
The corporate leadership and executives of QFC (a regional
supermarket chain with headquarters in Bellevue, Wash.,)
Albertson's (supermarkets) and Safeway (supermarkets) are
winners for
a) raising the cost of all products for all customers with the
high-costs of maintaining the so-called "Savings Cards" which
create a two-tiered separate and unequal pricing system for
stores which are not members only such as Costco.
b) QFC, Albertson's and Safeway force
non-English and ESL speaking shoppers, including immigrants, to
pay higher prices for the same retail products as more educated
English-literate customers;
c) They force semi-literate and illiterate customers to pay
higher prices for the same retail products as more highly
educated customers;
d) for forcing disabled customers to pay higher retail prices
for the same retail products as non-disabled customers.
The failure of Washington State Attorney
General Rob McKenna, his predecessor and of other Attorney's
General in the United States to file suit against these
corporations for blatant and outrageous retail policies has set
economic justice back to the 1960's, 1950's and earlier to a
time when red-lining, overt segregation and discrimination
were the law and/or practice of the land.
THE 2006 - 2007 CHARBROILED WINGS AWARD RECIPIENT
The executive
management of the Washington Mutual corporation, (WAMU) are the
winners for their 2006 billboard and Metro bus advertising
signage campaign extolling the virtues of cigar smoking to our
communities children, youth and young adults.
Cigars, like cigarettes, cause emphysema, lung cancer
and other tumors, strokes, heart disease, heart attacks,
premature death and untold misery and economic hardship for the
victims, their families and loved ones. Tobacco caused diseases
help contribute to the ever-rising cost of health care in the
United States.
