GUIDED BY MOSES, GENERAL
BEREK JOSELEWICZ ROCKETS TO SPACE
1989
First of the planned series: "The rabbi said
the Jews came from outer space")
General Joselewicz was the only Jewish general between the Bar Kochba
revolt and the 20th century in Palestine-Israel. Joselewicz was
the steward of Prince Nassalski, the Archbishop of Vilna. The fight for
freedom for impoverished and oppressed Jews and Christians alike was led
by Christian Polish army officers who had fought for American independence
in the Continental Army.
Their chief military leader was General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a hero of the
American Revolution. Kosciuzsko led the call for an uprising against the
two oppressors of Poles: the Russian Czar and the King of Prussia. Under
the direction of Kosciuszko,
General Joselowitz and Josef Aronowicz, also Jewish, organized a Jewish
Legion with a stirring call to arms printed in Yiddish. Five hundred
volunteers joined: poor Jewish youths with no military background:
tailors, butchers, wagoners and blacksmiths. Although they fought bravely
and fiercely, only twenty survived the assault on the legion by Russian
regulars on Praga, the Jewish quarter of Warsaw. Among those twenty was
Joselewicz.

ALEX SCHWARZ IN WÏEN
Linocut, 1999-2002. Alex & Gertrude Schwarz, both refugees from Nazi
Austria, were library patrons where I worked in Seattle in the early 90's.
About two years after Trudi passed on, several years later, Alex returned
to Vienna after 60 years away to spend his remaining years at the
Maimonides-Centrum Jewish Home for the Aged. Segan visited him in Oct. '99
on his way to Israel; during his visit the artist did several sketches of
Alex. This lino was also used as part of the imagery seen in Under Wings
Gallery artwork No. 49 depicting Italian Jewish resistance activist
Eugenio Curiel.
The lino is 5 7/8 H x 4 1/8" W.
