| Segan will
be facilitating his new "Drawing for Healing" workshop
with teachers at the Alexander Muss High School in Hod Ha'sharon, Israel
on May 3rd. (A previously scheduled lecture & workshop with M.A. Art
Therapy students at the School of Social Work, Ben Gurion University was
cancelled due to a faculty members unforeseen absence during the time of
Segan's visit; and will be replanned for another visit by the artist to
Israel). The first-ever presentation of the workshop was held with a class of German language & literature students of Professor Janet Holmgren at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma in early April. Everyone drew a visual drawn response to the Under the Wings of G-d slide presentation which preceding the workshop, and everyone joined in the discussion. Previous HETA drawing workshops have been with fifth and sixth grade students under the direction of Art Specialist Dr. Ann Corn at the Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Columbia, Missouri in '96, '97 and '98. The students were 10-12 year olds. The drawing for healing workshop curriculum and teaching development is designed to address a neglected aspect of Shoah, genocide & current conflict/war education: The need for audiences to have a way to process and heal from the trauma, pain & sadness of learning about emotionally wrenching history and current events. Akiva is developing this programming to help train teachers, professors, art therapists and other health care workers and clergy in individual & group healing techniques using interpretative processes in art making combined with group discussion. The workshops are geared towards those who may have no or little art knowledge and for those who like to exclaim they "can't even draw a straight line with a ruler!" Seattle videographer David Sokal (who will be visiting Israel at the same time) will film a cinema-verité style digital format film of the Alexander Muss High School Segan led workshop for Yom Ha'shoah with the schools teaching faculty and administrators. |
