 BLADES OF GRASS

1974
Rapidiograph ink drawing. A world class artwork which I greatly admired about the time I did this was Albrect Durer's watercolor "The Turf of Grass." 
Drawn on-site by the campus lake at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale

Seen below in April '96 during Segan's lecture visit to the SIU campus, 
Larry is showing Segan a bird sculpture he'd created many years earlier. 
Now retired as a painting & drawing professor from the School of Art & Design at Southern Illinois University, Larry was one of Segan's undergrad art professors. He continues an active regimen of drawing, painting and some etching work.

Drawn on-site in a private country park in the Cascades (near Seattle).  I had never heard of a privately owned park 'til then, when a friend took me to this park, which we had to pay to enter! It was beautiful, but why bother, when there are so many free park areas around Puget Sound?

 Drawn while sitting on the small wooden pier at the north side of the lake (about midway between the Bathhouse Theatre and the Aurora, not far from "duck beach"), you can see the tree and house line to the south (near where the bleachers and boathouse are).

THE HILLS AND DALES OF MY COUNTRY ESTATE

 1990
27 1/4" H x 23" W. Ink and gouache/watercolor.
I bartered my country estate for a very large house plant from the owner of a Seattle plant store back 'round 1991. The plant died a few months later. She's probably made a killing on the real estate from the lands around my country estate in the years since.

THEE OLD CROW FANCIED 
HIMSELF AN ART CRITIC, BY JOVE!

 1992 (?) 
This was a birthday gift for Captain (U.S. Army, retired) Dr. Gordon Gilkey, Curator of Prints at the Portland Art Museum, who passed away October 28, 2000. The drawing of this old tree was proceeding on schedule outdoors - "en plein aire" - at Greenlake, the most popular park in all of Seattle. Then hark! A well-trained crow decided to use this art-in-progress for target practice. Who knew where it learned such flying abilities? Who trained it to navigate so well? Did they have a huge party later that evening in the trees?

Ink, gouache, colored pencil with artified mat; drawn images on the matboard.
One of my personal favorite artworks. 
The ship was berthed at the south end of Lake Union one year and it was an irresistible draw. It was reported to be the last of the old Relief ships that served Puget Sound and the waters off the Olympic Peninsula to lighthouses.

Drawn on-site by one of the three beaches near the tiny Native American village - reservation at La Push....on the northwest coast of the Olympic Peninsula.
The rock formation where the passageway can be walked through at low tide is called "Hole in the Wall" in guidebooks.

Dated May 8, 2003 in ink on the drawing.
Drawn on site very close to where the drawing (above) was drawn from. The "Hole in the wall" is the open area beneath the "arch." Walkers can walk through and underneath the arch at low tide - as long as they keep watch on the incoming tide!
